"Emergency Interface Unit" for Bus Companies
Motorola were contracted to supply radio communication and GPS location services for a large bus fleet in ACT. The missing link was the interface between the "Driver under Attack" emergency foot switch, the bus two-way radio and the bus background music source. We were presented with the challenge of developing an Emergency Interface Unit (EIU) that connected all these units together. In the event of a Driver Emergency we needed to silence the onboard background music, initiate a handsfree radio call to the bus network coordination centre and start the video surveillance recording system. The project also involved designing and manufacturing two special antenna mounting discs with different internal diameters.
The technical risks involved developing a unit that could communicate to the other components with 99.9% reliability and would be immune to constant vibration and never issue a false trigger/alarm.
